Understanding Feline Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH)

Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) is a neurological condition characterised by the underdevelopment of the cerebellum. Damage to this region of the brain results in disruptions to motor skills and coordination.
CH in cats typically occurs due to prenatal or perinatal factors, such as infections or trauma experienced during gestation or shortly after birth. However, the most common cause is an unvaccinated pregnant cat contracting panleukopenia (feline parvo) whilst pregnant. The condition is not hereditary, but rather arises from external factors impacting brain development during crucial stages of fetal growth. Additionally, supervision may be necessary, particularly in unfamiliar surroundings, to prevent accidents and ensure their safety. But even with simple adjustments, many families simply do not want to adopt a cat with a disability.
